OP-2 Feature Spotlight: Advanced Role-Players

One of the powerful features of OP-2 is the Advanced Role-Player module. Today we deep dive into its capabilities and how they can improve your training outcomes.

Designed for dynamic movement and verbal engagement, the Role-Player technology enhances scenario-based training through realistic participant involvement.

OP-2 gives Instructors the power to seamlessly generate a range of “Instructor-controlled characters” such as suspects, bystanders and crowds. These characters can be highly customised to exhibit specific behaviours and respond intelligently to commands and real-time events.

In the Role-Player module, an Instructor (or other participant) can physically embody suspect roles within the virtual environment via the role-player headset. These users act out movement and speech, and have active control of their weapon choice and action using their controllers.

Role-players are especially good for training complex de-escalation with fluid dialogue and human interaction.

This functionality not only supports the creation and reconstruction of specific training scenarios but also presents trainees with authentic challenges that test the full spectrum of their skills — from verbal communication and de-escalation techniques, to split-second critical thinking and decision making.

The below demonstration showcases a real-life participant utilizing the Role-Player headset to enact a suspect within the virtual scenario. Through this integration, the participant becomes an active character, enabling natural interaction and authentic response dynamics between the suspect and trainees.

Whilst role-players have full control of their virtual character, Instructor-controlled suspects are customized with a set of rules through a hierarchy of radial dials, examples below.

Generating Instructor-controlled characters and suspect, with deep levels of customization, is all managed through the easy-to-use Instructor tablet.

Example: Weapon customization

Select the Weapon Type from the radial menu.

From the sub-menu, define the Weapon Action, such as reveal.

The Instructor-controlled characters then action these pre-defined rules within the scenario.

In the Role-Player function, the physical participant performs their own actions with no pre-defined rules.

The advanced role-player module delivers exceptional flexibility in training, supporting trainee growth through realistic and complex experiences in a safe and controlled environment.
